When people at work share their or his employees'' thoughts and feedback about how well their colleagues are doing. It''s like giving grades to each other based on performing jobs. This usually might happen between those people who work together closely.

Generally, human resources conduct a peer appraisal to bring development to those employees or workers who work in a team or within a group of working members of the same philosophy.

Peer appraisal in HRM stands for the act of asking coworkers for their opinion on each other''s work. It is something like taking opinions from people who actually see how somebody is performing in their job. This helps the company have a complete and fair evaluation of what each person brings to the team.

In other words, it''s a report card on teamwork from the colleagues an individual closely works with. HR uses it to understand everyone''s strengths and weaknesses, making sure they have a full picture of each person''s contribution to the team and company. It helps create a balanced view fair to everybody of performance.

Peer Examples

Peer appraisal can take many forms. It can be in the form of feedback or in the form of grades on how we work with other people. Here are some examples:

  • 360-Degree Feedback: Sarah''s project management skills are rated by team members, supervisors, and even clients, showcasing a broad perspective.
  • Rating Scales: Sidhu''s communication skills are rated on a scale of 1 to 10 by colleagues. This indicates improvements to be made and also pinpoints the areas where his strength lies.
  • Open-Ended Feedback: Ayesha''s team members share anecdotes about how she was wonderful to work with on the difficult project, clearly indicating strengths and weaknesses.
  • Rank and Yank: At a team meeting, every member shares and ranks each member of his/her team on contribution; once ranked during the meeting, John is mentioned as the top contributor, which is the opposite case on the other circled people.

Types of Peer Review

Peer appraisal may be in various forms, such as feedback or grades on how colleagues work with each other. Below are examples of three types of Peer Appraisal:

  • Single Blind:

    Explanation: In a single-blind type, the individual getting the feedback won''t be informed who actually evaluated him. By this said, one will acquire honest opinions and won''t feel apprehensive concerning the subsequent consequences.

    Example: If you receive feedback regarding your teamwork and you do not know who in the team has said what. The team members can afford to be more honest.

  • Open Peer Appraisal:

    Explanation: When open peer appraisal is done, everyone knows who is getting and who is giving the feedback. There is more open and clear communication among members of a team.

    Example: During a team meeting, everyone expresses what they like about everybody else''s work and their points for improvement. This way, it is like sharing thoughts openly.

  • Collaborative Peer Appraisal:

    Definition: The collaborative peer appraisal means that a group of people are working together to evaluate the performance of someone. It is therefore like the input from the whole team, hence making the assessment well-rounded.

    Example: A team will discuss how good a teammate is at leading, and everyone has input to give a ""holistic view"" about that person''s leadership abilities. It is like everybody is tugging in the same direction, understanding and helping one another.
