Comp off, also known as compensatory off, is a leave type that an employee can avail if they have worked on a holiday or a non-working day. This is generally mentioned in the company policy handbook by the companies. The new joiners are also communicated the same during the orientation.
This is a leave that employees of a company are entitled to take on a working day in lieu of, or in compensation for, having worked on a non-working day, i.e., Public holidays and weekends. In most cases, employees are asked to work overtime by their employer in case something urgent comes up.
The limit to it depends on the organization; there is no compulsory limit of days specified by the Indian government for this. Most companies prefer to make compensatory off available for up to 30 days.
If an employee works on a public holiday, they can avail comp off the very next day or till the time comp off stands valid. Similarly, when the employee works on a weekend, if the person has genuinely come to the office to work, the same rule applies.
In case of any weekly off or public holiday at the time when an employee is on a work tour/travel, he/she shall be granted half-day comp off. Note: If the public holiday/weekly off is spent traveling, it will not be considered a working day. Comp off will be given only for the time you meet clients or you are at the site.
According to Indian Labour Laws, you must not work 7 days a week in India. The Factory''s Act stipulates that there must be 48 hours of work in a week and 1 or 2 days off in a week. Employees are entitled to receive overtime pay at a double rate if they work beyond 48 hours.
In case of working attendance management in HRMantra, you can move to the requests section, click new request, mark a date on the calendar you want to apply the comp off leave for. A section will open on the right side, select the type of leave, i.e. compensatory off in it, add comments if any, and submit.
Well, due to the world model jumble from work from the office to home, to hybrid, emails have become a thing of the past. Most companies have started using attendance management software to mark, track, and manage attendance.
Check if the software allows one to raise an application for comp off. If not, then you should consider switching to better software. Till then you can share an email mentioning the non-working day that you worked on and avail your comp off.
A brief mail body for comp off request can look something like this:
""I worked on a public holiday/non-working day i.e. _______. I would like to take a comp off against the same for date ________.""
Make sure to mark your manager, reporting manager, and HR in the mail.
