Basically, it is the number of leaves you have remaining in your system that you intend to use according to your requirement.
The most traditional way to ask for your leave balance is to simply make a request to your HR department inquiring about your leave balance.
But it might turn into a nuisance, and, moreover, you''ll have to wait for a long time since HR can process your request even before finishing other work or resolving other queries. The best way is to have a proper HR system in your company that enables you to check your leave balance yourself without really having to bother your HR in person to know a small detail like this.
This is because, in most cases, if you go to HR to know your leave balance, they demand at least two days before you can ascertain your leave balance. The software systems, on the other hand, enable employees to know their leave balance right there and then.
A leave balance ensures the employee is aware of how many times they can take time off and whether it''s available for them. This may be used for resting, rejuvenating, attending to personal matters, or keeping healthy.
Now, the simple process is: You have a leave balance—let''s say you have 20 leaves for the year left in your leave balance. Now, depending on your need, you take between 2 and 5 days of leave again, let''s say to go on a trip, for instance.
Now you applied those before your payroll in this month; in that case, your leave balance will deduct to 15 days left. With this, now your balance is 15 more days that you will have to use in the future to take days off from work.
It could be anything at all—you''re sick and need to take leave, or you have a personal event at home or elsewhere, you can use the leave balance then as well.
Asking and approving leaves is basically a simple core process. You go to your manager and request to be on a leave. Under normal circumstances, they approve you directly from their side, but in that case, they might ask for the opinions of other heads to know if this leave be approved or not. Then, depending on their answers, they approve your leave.
There are different schools, however, so it can be a little bit different for different companies. For instance, in some companies, you''ll have to provide your written application and in others, you can have a leave through a software system that they approve from the system as well.
In some cases, you don''t even have to ask for it in writing; just by saying it, you are granted the leave.
Hence this process even depends upon the leave type you avail of. For example, mention sick leave right when you are right before you need to be on a sick leave and you might even be granted approval. In case of casual leaves, one may have to apply for the same well in advance, at least a day before, and on the other hand, for earned leaves one may need to request the manager by advance.
There are plenty of other leave balance calculators that you can easily get your hands on to calculate leave balance. Other than that, the simple formula for calculating leave balance is:
= (Basic Salary Dearness Allowance) / 30 x No of EL
But again, it can also be different for different companies. For example, some companies may carry forward only the earned leaves and let the casual or sick leaves go. Most of the companies move your leaves to the next year, not all.
On the other hand, other companies may carry forward all your leaves. This may also include encashing the leaves, later on, if you haven''t taken them.

This can vary from company to company, where each one of them has its own policy regarding remote work and leave balance.
Some organizations offer a few days of work from home for employees working in hybrid mode and a few leaves per month as mandatory.
